“Milagra Ridge Field Trip.” A partnership with the National Park Service. Join the National Parks staff on a guided tour and learn about the plants and animals native to the area. “Tutorial: Drop-In Tech Support for Older Adults with the Felton Institute Tech Squad.” Get one-on-one help with your phone or tablet, searching the internet, setting up an email account and other basic computer tasks. Cantonese-speaking Tech Squad members are available to assist, Friday, June 7, 1:30-3 p.m.

“Read Together, Silent Book Club.” Bring any book (fiction or nonfiction) for a period of silent reading followed by a discussion when you share what you are reading with others. The club meets every other Wednesday. Wednesdays, June 12 and 26, 3-5 p.m.

“Screen-printing with Calixto Robles.” Create your own work of print art using pre-prepared screens. Paper will be provided, bring your own tote bag or T-shirt to get printed. Calixto Robles is a painter, printmaker and sculptor from Oaxaca, Mexico. Inspired by the myths, symbols, colors, and ancient traditions of Meso-America, he mixes the silkscreen techniques, which enhance texture and brilliant color, with drawn and found images. Robles’ paintings explore magical realms while his ceramics allow him to reconnect with earthly materials. Space limited. Reservations required: 415-355-5600. “Japanese Bonsai.” Dory Schrader, co-founder of Bonsaify, will present the history of bonsai and some basic information about bonsai care and maintenance. “Presentation: San Francisco Opera Behind the Scenes – American Opera.” Take a deep dive into the San Francisco Opera’s upcoming performances and themes with Cole Thomason-Redus, the Opera’s content curator for the Department of Diversity, Equity and Community. Richmond Branch will host three Sunday Summer sessions in this series: American Opera on June 30, Bizet’s Carmen on July 28 and A Sneak Peek at the 2024 Fall Season on Aug. 25. Workshop: Mandarin for Beginners, Monday, June 3, 1-3 p.m. Discover Chinese culture through an immersive journey into the Mandarin language across engaging classes. Space limited. Workshop: Self-Defense for the People. Learn how to defend yourself in everyday urban situations, such as riding the bus or waiting for BART, going to your car, leaving work late or even during social situations at the end of the day. Performance: San Francisco Symphony Chamber Concert. Join us at the Sunset Branch for a chamber concert featuring San Francisco Symphony Principal Harpist Katherine Siochi. Katherine will perform classical pieces from a range of composers and teach us about this ancient instrument (the harp is believed to have existed as far back as 15,000 B.C.!). This event is open to all library patrons and is brought to you by the San Francisco Symphony’s Community Chamber Concert program. Siochi joined the San Francisco Symphony as principal harp beginning in the 2023–24 season. She was previously principal harp of the Minnesota Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony and Sarasota Orchestra, and has appeared as a guest with the Chicago Symphony and New York Philharmonic. She was the gold medalist of the 2016 USA International Harp Competition. Friday, June 7, 3–4 p.m.

Film: “Out of the Dust” is a film that combines dance, poetry and music to evoke the specter of the internment of Japanese Americans. The program includes discussion with its creators. “Out of the Dust” is told through ghosts of Manzanar Detention Camp who come to life through the poetry of Janice Mirikitani, the music of Miles Lassi and Paul Chihara and the Japanese American folk dance “Ei Ja Nai Ka” (meaning “ain’t it good?”) choreographed and music written by PJ Hirabayashi. After the closing of the camps, who and what memories were left behind in the windy dust-laden desert of Manzanar? Saturday, June 8, 2-4 p.m.

Presentation: Talking About Death Won’t Kill You! Jim VanBuskirk shares his journey from death ignorance to death education through hosting Death Cafés, volunteering with Final Exit Network and compiling resources on death and dying. Through personal experiences and insights, attendees will be encouraged to embrace conversations about this stigmatized topic. From advance care directives to options for choosing one’s time of death, we’ll explore essential end-of-life issues together, fostering greater comfort and appreciation for life’s preciousness. FREE SELF-DEFENSE WORKSHOPS FOR OLDER ADULTS

One Richmond is partnering with Tat Wong Kung Fu Academy to offer FREE self-defense workshops to older adults in the Richmond District. In response to continuing anti-Asian racism, this initiative aims to provide practical skills and boost confidence in a safe, supportive environment. Workshops are one-hour long and include demonstrations, active participation and using self-defense tools like hand alarms. Each participant gets a hand alarm at the end of the seminar. HEART OF THE RICHMOND District NIGHT MARKET

This engaging and entertaining event in the Central Richmond District will be a family-friendly event highlighting the diverse offerings from small local businesses and will appeal to people of all ages – locals and visitors alike. INNER SUNSET FLEA MARKET

The Inner Sunset Flea Market takes place every second Sunday of the month. Voted one of the top 10 flea markets in the Bay Area, it began in 2015 as a grassroots-organized market in collaboration with Sunset Mercantile. This Inner Sunset Sundays event is presented by Inner Sunset Park Neighbors and includes more than 30 resident, artisan and nonprofit vendors, as well as live music, all-ages activities and fun themed days. IRVING STREET FEST-A-RAMA

The inaugural Irving Street Fest-A-Rama will occur on Saturday, June 8, from noon to 5 p.m., on Irving Street, between 19th and 22nd avenues.
