Observing the Observatory

Sweeneys Observatory circa 1907

This picture, circa 1907, shows the ruins (still visible) of Sweeney’s Observatory, which was located on top of Strawberry Hill in Golden Gate Park’s Stow Lake and destroyed by the Great
Earthquake of 1906. The observatory was built for the 1894 Mid-Winter Exposition. Photo courtesy of private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project.
