This photograph, circa 1918, shows the west end of Golden Gate Park at Ocean Beach.
The buildings are part of the United States’ Life Saving Station with the Dutch
Windmill on the right. The Great Highway has a mixture of old and
new transportation – some horse and buggies and some newfangled contraptions being
propelled by internal combustion engines. Men and women dressed up for a day at
the beach. Photo courtesy of private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project
