Fleishhacker Pool, a six-million-gallon outdoor swimming pool at Ocean Beach south of Sloat Boulevard, opened to the public in 1925. The balustraded diving platform eventually succumbed to the foggy elements and was replaced with a two-level concrete and steel tower. The pool closed in 1971 and the site is now a parking lot for the San Francisco Zoo. Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhood Project.
