Historical Photo – GG Park’s Early Aquifer

GGParkWaterTower_wnp26.419

To tap a subterranean aquifer and provide water for Golden Gate Park, a pump works was first built in the late 1880s in what is today the Botanical Garden. In 1893, a replacement facility built in the Spanish Renaissance style featured a 115-foot chimney (pictured above) designed by architect Arthur Page Brown. When a fire and explosion damaged the pump works in 1916, a more utilitarian concrete building took its place. Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project.
