‘Flower Piano’ Draws Huge Crowds

A young musician entertains the crowd at Flower Piano. More than 60,000 music lovers (70% of whom were San Franciscans) came to the event at the Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park Sept. 17-21. The annual event features a dozen pianos placed in various areas of the garden. They are free to play by members of the public when not in use by professional musicians. Like most events, Flower Piano was cancelled in 2020 due to the precautions taken to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. What was once a 12-day celebration of music in a nature setting was pared down to five days this year. Photo by Jim Watkins, courtesy of the SF Botanical Garden.
