Press Release: Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day at McCoppin Elementary

On Monday, Nov, 14, McCoppin Elementary students participated in the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day for the very first time. Families were invited to celebrate Ruby Bridges’ legacy, along with the teachers, staff and students.

Prior to Nov. 14, students learned about Ruby Bridges from upper grades, colored special activity sheets and had access to books about racial equity at the school library. The FMES DEI Committee also purchased books for each classroom about Ruby Bridges.

After Principal Bennett Lee’s morning announcements, students, staff and families gathered for a walk around the block of the school in the Inner Richmond to commemorate Ruby Bridges. The walk was led by upper grades and the student council. Ms. Sharon In, the 4th/5th combined class teacher, championed the initiative of celebrating Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day with the DEI Committee. Her class has a team of “JEDI’s” Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion ambassadors who helped organize the walk this morning. Everyone was invited to wear purple in honor of this day.
