Press Release: ‘Prom on the Prom’ on JFK Promenade Aug. 19

Prom on the Prom to bring fun, joy and dancing to Car-Free JFK Promenade on Saturday, Aug. 19

Social event with games, donuts, and dancing will give San Franciscans of all ages an opportunity to dress up, have fun, and connect with friends — old and new — while celebrating Car-Free JFK Promenade

Hundreds of people will gather on Car-Free JFK Promenade in Golden Gate Park on Saturday, Aug. 19, 5-8 p.m. for the second annual “Prom on the Prom,” a fun and free event for people of all ages to dress up, mingle, dance, and have a great time at the Lindy Bridge between Eighth and 10th avenues. The event will have a DJ, a crowd-voted “prom court” with fun superlatives, donuts, and other activities, and attendees are encouraged to dress up for the occasion — it is prom, after all!

The event is free and open to people — and pets — of all ages, and people are encouraged to RSVP to help the organizers estimate attendees and plan accordingly. People who want to support Prom on the Prom and help cover the related costs can donate while RSVPing or by sending donations to one of the organizers, Sarah Katz-Hyman, using Venmo and Cash App. Attendees are also encouraged to post to social media using the hashtag #PromOnTheProm.

Now in its second year, Prom on the Prom was created to bring people together, create joy, and celebrate Car-Free JFK Promenade, which became permanent in April 2022 — after a 7-to-4 vote by the Board of Supervisors — and was codified by voters in November 2022 when Proposition J passed with 65% of the vote. Car-Free JFK Promenade, an approximately 1.5-mile stretch of street in Golden Gate Park has been transformed from a cut-through road for car drivers to a welcoming, vibrant, and joyful public community space. Prom on the Prom helped to celebrate this space in 2022 and will continue the tradition while activating the space in 2023.

Attendees are encouraged to get to the Prom by taking public transportation — including the free Golden Gate Park Shuttle — or riding a bike, scooter, skateboard, or other mobility device. The 44-O’Shaughnessy and 5-Fulton buses stop within 500 feet of the Prom, and the 7-Haight bus and N-Judah train stop nearby with the 7-Haight connecting to the free Golden Gate Park Shuttle on Haight Street near Stanyan Street. For those who ride a bike or scooter, parking will be available at the Prom. For people who want to use Bay Wheels bikeshare, they can use the promotional code PROMONTHEPROM23 for a $10 credit to use for Prom on the Prom, and there are two new Bay Wheels stations located on 8th Avenue and Pompei Circle along JFK Promenade. People being driven to the Prom can be dropped off on Fulton Street or in the Music Concourse, and cars can be stored in one of 4,000+ subsidized parking spaces in and around Golden Gate Park, including in the Music Concourse Garage.
