‘Then and Now’: Lower Great Highway at Vicente Street

Above: The Chickery restaurant on the Lower Great Highway at Vicente Street, late 1920s. Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project/OpenSFHistory. Below: The signs are gone, no longer offering “The Finest Dinner on Earth” for $1. The larger windows on the right front of the building have been reduced by a brick wall to two smaller windows. Recently, an apartment for rent sign was in the window. Photo by Michael Durand.

  1. This history is enlightening to me because I’ve lived in the neighborhood for decades, and was previously incorrectly informed that it had once been a firehouse. This is a great photo from the past. Thank you for sharing it.
