BENEFIT COMEDY PERFORMANCES AT 4 STAR THEATER

The 4 Star Theater and comedian Marky McFly have partnered for a charity comedy show benefiting Oakland Community Kitchens. CEO of Hella Funny and Bay Area comedy legend Stroy Moyd will be headlining the event, with another local favorite, Jalisa Robinson, hosting the event. Other comedians performing include: Elisha Tan, an up-and-coming Singaporean comic based in the San Francisco Bay Area; Shivaan Nadan, a hilarious rising star in the SF comedian scene; Stephanie Block, journalist, author, comedian and producer of her own comedy shows; AJC, originally from North Carolina, is a well-known comic and very funny character in the Bay Area comedy scene; and John Beard who uses a unique style of non sequiturs and has appeared at the Punchline and various venues in SF. If you want guaranteed laughs and a good time for a good cause, come out to the 4 Star Theater at 2200 Clement St. on Saturday, Jan. 13. Tickets available at 4-star-movies.com.

“Refuse Refuse: Neighborhood cleanup and Storytime.” Led by community member Vince Yuen, meet at the 10th Avenue door of the Richmond Library to help with neighborhood clean-up. Every second Tuesday of the month. Jan. 9, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

ADULT PROGRAMS:

“Breath Meditation and Gentle Yoga with Don Narin.” Guided meditation for calming and stress release with a gentle form of yoga that anyone can do. No movement beyond what is comfortable for you. Very relaxing and calming. Every Thursday, 11 a.m.-noon.

“Tutorial: Tech Savy at 60+.” Learn basics of tablets and iPhones. It is a seven-class series. The topics include introduction of devices and hand gestures, setting up and using email account, using WeChat, changing keyboard and language, installing applications on your devices, Wi-Fi setting and Internet introduction and joining Zoom meeting. Please bring your own devices: Apple/Android. The class is taught in Cantonese. Space is limited. To reserve a space, call 415-355-5600. This program is in partnership with Self-Help for the Elderly. “Tutorial: Drop-In Tech Support for Older Adults with the Felton Institute Tech Squad.” Get one-on-one help with your phone or tablet, searching the Internet, setting up an email account and other basic computer tasks. Cantonese-speaking Tech Squad members are available to assist, Friday, Jan. 5, 1:30-3:30 p.m. Cal Fresh applications help is available from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

“Read Together, Silent Book Club.” Bring any book (fiction or nonfiction) for a period of silent reading followed by a discussion to share what you are reading with others. The club meets every other Wednesday. Jan. 10 and 24, 3-5 p.m.

“Performance: Lion Dance with Jing Mo Athletic Association.” Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with a Lion Dance performance with Jing Mo Athletic Association. Learn more about the rich heritage of Lunar New Year traditions, see a spectacular martial arts demonstration and touch a piece of lucky lettuce to start your year off right. Saturday, Jan. 13, 1:15-1:45 p.m.

“Performance: Melody of China.” Celebrate Chinese New Year of Dragon with Chinese instrumental music performed by the students from Melody of China. Space is limited. Reservations required: 415-355-5600. This program is in partnership with Melody of China. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2-3 p.m.

“Workshop: Westside Affordable Housing Sunset and Richmond.” This workshop offers affordable housing resources and educational information in Sunset and Richmond districts. You will learn how to apply for affordable housing, who qualifies for affordable housing, how many units will be built in the community and why it matters to Richmond and Sunset residents. “Film: The Legacy of Mary Ellen Pleasant.” The story about a black businesswoman and abolitionist, who made her fortune by investing in companies that had a major influence on the western economy, like Wells Fargo and the Bank of California. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2-3 p.m.

“Workshop: Self-Defense for the People.” Learn how to defend yourself in everyday urban situations, such as riding the bus or waiting for BART, going to your car, leaving work late or even during social situations at the end of the day. This class is great for older adults and is developed to be simple, effective and adaptable. We believe that people of all ages and physical abilities should be able to protect themselves. Class taught by Legacy Filipino Martial Arts. Reservations required: 415-355-5600 or sign up at the reference desk. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2-3 p.m.

“Film: “Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Heart.” From the director of “The Joy Luck Club” and “Chan is Missing,” Wayne Wang’s “Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Heart” (1985) offers another love letter to San Francisco, this time centering on the City’s Richmond District. As the film narrative unfolds, a Chinese immigrant widow faces the New Year with some anxiety when her own death is foretold. The heroine creates a bucket list of things she wants to accomplish before she dies, including seeing her daughter married, and visiting China and paying her respects one last time. Get into the spirit of Lunar New Year with this San Francisco movie. PG, 86 min., 1985. Closed captions (CC) in English. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 3-5 p.m.
