SAN FRANCISCO PUBLIC WORKS KICKS OFF NEW SEASON OF VOLUNTEER GREENING

AND CLEANING EVENTS ON SATURDAY TO BEAUTIFY CITY NEIGHBORHOODS

Love Our City: Neighborhood Beautification Day Events Focus on a Different Supervisorial District Every Month; the First One of the Year Will Be Held in the Richmond District

More than 125 community volunteers are primed to kick off the 2024 season of Love Our City: Neighborhood Beautification Day events this Saturday, Jan. 27, in the City’s Richmond District.

The monthly workdays, hosted by San Francisco Public Works, offer a variety of neighborhood greening and cleaning projects, including planting trees, mulching and weeding medians, removing graffiti and tending to rain gardens.

The team rotates through a different supervisorial district once a month, January through November. Last year, Neighborhood Beautification Day events drew 940 participants who collectively contributed 3,290 hours of volunteer time.

“It truly is heartening to see so many community members, including multi-generational families, spend part of their Saturdays working alongside our landscape, tree and cleaning crews to take care of our city,” said Public Works Director Carla Short. “Not only do we get a lot of meaningful work done, but we also build inspiring partnerships that feed the spirit of civic pride.”

Saturday’s event will get underway at 9 a.m. at Argonne Elementary School, Cabrillo Street and 17th Avenue. Mayor London Breed and District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan are among the invited guests.

After a quick welcome rally, volunteers will get to work. Projects include planting trees along La Playa, sprucing up the Geary Boulevard median, picking up litter near the Great Highway, painting out graffiti on Balboa Street and mulching the sidewalk gardens near Argonne Elementary.
