The 4 Star theater has always had a special place in my heart. It was “my neighborhood theater” where as a young girl, I saw You Only Live Twice 3 times. It was a place of escapism, joy and pure entertainment only a few blocks from my house. I am pleased to say that in keeping with that tradition, the new Comedy Series at the 4 Star theater is that and much more.
Most of us know that the 4 Star theater has gone through a major renovation and reopened in December 2022. Adam Bergeron, who operates the Balboa theater and Laundromat bagels, also manages the 4 Star so right there you know that he intends for the 4 Star to be a place for everyone to enjoy but especially folks in our hood. And now, along with great popcorn, he has brought comedy to us.
I first learned about the comedy series when I met the promoter, Marky McFly, at the Farmers’ Market. When he told me he was starting live comedy at the 4 Star, I knew I had to get my hubby to go. So on a lovely Saturday night in March, we joined a packed house at the 4 Star and were not disappointed…we had a great time. In this time of intensity, anxiousness and uncertainty, this is the perfect prescription…comedic therapy!
The live comedy show is about 90 minutes long and the audience is surprisingly a wonderful mixture of young and old (we are on the older side!) It features about six comedians with the show ending with a special guest headliner. Marky told me he tries to get different styles of comedy so there is something for everyone. The theater is small enough to feel intimate but not too small that it is intimidating. The vibe was fun and welcoming; there was only one heckler who was politely escorted out. Lots of laughter, lots of support for the comedians and lots of fun.
The shows are $20 presale and $25 at the door. Come early to choose your seats and get some of that fabulous popcorn. The new summer series includes live comedy shows twice a month. Go to http://www.4*Star-Movies.com for show dates and times, buy tickets and browse the bios of the comedians. Who knows? You may be entertained by the next Robin Williams and supporting a neighborhood gem at the same time.
