SFPD Arrests Driver for Fatal Vehicle Collision

On March 16, at approximately 12:13 p.m., San Francisco Police officers responded to the area of Ulloa Street and Lenox Way for a solo vehicle collision that crashed into pedestrians at a bus stop at the intersection of Ulloa Street and Lenox Way.

Officers arrived on scene and located multiple victims suffering from injuries. SFPD officers and SFFD firefighters rendered aid to the victims. Despite life-saving efforts made by first responders and medical staff, four people died as a result of the vehicle collision.

The SFPD Traffic Collision Investigations Unit (TCIU) has led this investigation from the onset and has been working closely with the district attorney on this investigation. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 78-year-old Mary Fong Lau of San Francisco. Investigators developed probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant for Lau.

On July 2, at approximately 5:15 p.m., TCIU Investigators located Lau at a residence on the 200 block of Crestlake Drive and placed her into custody for the arrest warrant. Lau was transported to San Francisco County Jail where she was booked on four counts of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence (192(c)(1) PC).

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends, family and loved ones of the mother, father and their two young children who died,” said Police Chief William Scott. “An entire family of four died as a result of this vehicle collision. Our department will continue to do all that we can to assist the district attorney in this heartbreaking tragedy.”

“I would like to once again extend my deepest condolences to the friends and family of the victims and the West Portal community,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “I would also like to thank the San Francisco Police Department for their thorough investigation. My office will now do everything we can to ensure that justice is done.”

While an arrest has been made, this remains an active investigation.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at 1-415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.
