Letter to the Editor: The Upper Great Highway Brings the Community Together

Editor:

As two generations of an Outer Sunset family – one in college, one having been retired for more than 20 years – we love our neighborhood. We love going on walks, enjoying ocean views and seeing children have space to play.

In the past, we mostly walked along the streets of the Avenues, but it was a whole new experience when the City closed part of the Upper Great Highway for the community to have the outdoor recreation space. Suddenly, we had this wide open space right next to the ocean, and it became a place where we could walk and enjoy nature in a new way.

When the Upper Great Highway is a park, we can immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the ocean and the beach without the distractions of car traffic.

We believe our community deserves this open space. As hard as we work to provide for our families and pay our bills, we need a place to take a break, so we can clear our minds, breathe fresh air, relax and unwind. A park serves this purpose for our community.

When we go to the Upper Great Highway when it is a park, we see communities connecting and being active together. We love spending time with family at free activities for the public, like live music, tai chi and yoga. The Upper Great Highway is also a space for us to have big celebrations with families and friends, like we’ve already seen during the Autumn Moon Festival and Halloween.

The Upper Great Highway as a park provides plenty of room for kids to play and for people of all ages to walk or bike by the ocean. We hope that Prop. K will encourage the City to add more benches to the space for seniors like us to sit down when we get tired of walking. We would also love to see more nature on our walks and know the Upper Great Highway Park would benefit from more flowers and plants. After all, it’s a great place for us to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Voting yes on Proposition K could bring these changes, creating a beautiful park for all of us. Especially after considering the southern end of the Great Highway will already permanently close due to erosion into the ocean, supporting this proposition is even more sensible.

The opportunity to have a park right next to a beach is rare and special. We want to keep our peaceful oceanside strolls, make room for everyone to take a break from their stressful lives, and have space for children to run and bike around without worrying about cars. Establishing a full-time park will allow everyone to enjoy it whenever they have free time. Overall, the park will benefit all San Franciscans, with Sunset residents especially enjoying convenient access to it. That is why we are voting Yes on K.

  1. I am getting bored of people writing stuff that Prop K does not include.Prop K does not include a park. There is no money proposed for a park.SF can not even repair or maintain what already exists. For example the cracks in sidewalks made by trees are the responsibility of SF.They are about 5 years backlogged. The roads have badly repaired potholes. The parks are in need of water fountains and bathrooms. It is absolutely more dangerous for a senior to walk with bikes going 30mph close by,especially if they have a dog or small children with them.I am tired of bikes obstructing traffic and riding on sidewalks.I am tired of self centered people who do not understand that people have tasks and limited time.Closing a thoughfare creates pollution, causes people not to shop or spend money on entertainment. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea to walk a dog on a hot road with little to sniff.

  2. I do honestly hope your family doesn’t get run over at the unsafe intersections with 20,000 more drivers per day. Someone’s family will not be so lucky.
