BIRDING FOR FAMILIES

San Francisco Nature Education conducts field trips for parents and their children ages 4-12 to learn about local birds in parks throughout San Francisco. Please join us on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. at the San Francisco Botanical Garden’s main entrance kiosk. We loan binoculars to children and adults and provide nature journals for kids. Adults $15, children $5. All participants must pre-register: sfnature.org.

DIWALI CELEBRATION AT FARMERS MARKET

On Sunday, Nov. 10, the Outer Sunset Farmers Market and Mercantile (OSFMM) will celebrate Diwali with a cultural exhibit, crafts by children, a sari show, dances, a cooking demonstration and food sharing with the community. Diwali has many interpretations in Hindu mythology, but the common belief is to honor the victory of good over evil, or light over darkness. In India, houses are lit up with lights, floors are decorated with Rangoli paintings, food is shared with families and the festivities are marked with dances and music. FELTON TECH SQUAD

Felton’s Tech Squad is providing free basic tech support for older adults and people with disabilities in the Richmond District. Ask questions regarding how to navigate your smartphone, tablet or laptop. Drop-in for one-on-one session in English at the Richmond Branch Library (351 Ninth Ave.) on Friday, Nov. 8, 1:30-3 p.m. We are also seeking volunteers who speak English and/or Cantonese. “Presentation: Natural Presidio.” Meet Ranger Fatima and use your five senses to learn about animals and plants that call the Presidio of San Francisco their home. Since 1998, Fatima Colindres has worked as interpretive park ranger at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area at the Presidio of San Francisco. They are passionate about providing a rich national park experience to people who traditionally have not visited the parks. Fatima uses their natural storytelling abilities to engage Spanish- and English-speaking audiences of all ages in fun and interactive experiences that help them gain a new love and respect for their National Parks. Thursday, Nov. 21, 4-5 p.m.

“Celebration: Bay Beats 2024 Launch Party.” An outdoor concert featuring four Bay Beats bands. Celebrating its second year as SFPL’s popular local music platform, Bay Beats presents a four-band concert in Richmond Branch’s 10th Avenue mini park, between Geary Boulevard and Clement Street. Coinciding with the 2024 release of albums onto Bay Beats, this showcase is presented in partnership with Amoeba Music and White Crate. The lineup of bands reflects the great depth and variety of the Bay Area music scene:

1 p.m. – Kathy Kallick Band – Grammy award-winning Bluegrass

2 p.m. – PEÑA – Latin lo~fi

3 p.m. – Grooblen – Psychedelic cabaret rock

“Refuse Refuse: Neighborhood cleanup and Storytime.” Led by community member Vince Yuen, meet at the 10th Avenue door of the Richmond Library to help with neighborhood clean-up. Every second Tuesday of the month. Nov. 12, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

“Performance: SF Symphony Chamber Concert.” A chamber concert featuring San Francisco Symphony musicians performing classical pieces from a range of composers and sharing their experiences as members of the San Francisco Symphony. This event is open to all library patrons and is brought to you by the San Francisco Symphony’s Community Chamber Concert program.

Featured musicians: Amos Yang, acting associate principal cello and Charles Chandler, bass.

Amos Yang joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2007 as assistant principal cello and was previously a member of the Seattle Symphony and a member of the Maia String Quartet. Born and raised in San Francisco, he was a member of the SF Symphony Youth Orchestra and San Francisco Boys Choir, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Julliard School. He now serves on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the San Francisco Academy Orchestra. Charles Chandler is the first member of the SFS Youth Orchestra to have become a member of the San Francisco Symphony. He studied with Shinji Eshima of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and with David Walter at Julliard. Prior to joining the SFS in 1992, he performed at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival and served as associate principal bass of the Phoenix Symphony. “Breath meditation and Gentle Yoga with Don Narin.” Guided meditation for calming and joint stress release with a gentle form of yoga that anyone can do. No movement beyond what is comfortable for you. Very relaxing and calming. Every Thursday, 11 a.m.-noon.

“Tutorial: Tech Savy at 60+.” Learn basics of tablets and iPhones. It is a seven-class series. Please bring your own devices: Apple/Android. The class is taught in Cantonese. Space is limited. “Tutorial: Drop-In Tech Support for Older Adults with the Felton Institute Tech Squad.” Get one-on-one help with your phone or tablet, searching the Internet, setting up an email account and other basic computer tasks. Cantonese-speaking Tech Squad members are available to assist, Friday, Nov. 8, 1:30-3 p.m.

“Read Together, Silent Book Club.” Bring any book (fiction or nonfiction) for a period of silent reading followed by a discussion when you share what you are reading with others. The club meets every other Wednesday, Nov. 13 and 27, 3-5 p.m.

“Workshop: CYC Disaster Preparedness Cycle Training.” Do not let earthquakes catch you off guard! Come to all three disaster preparedness workshops to learn earthquake preparedness.
