From the Editor: Great Hauntway

You’re holding another hefty issue this month. The October newspaper was 24 pages long – this month’s issue is 20 pages. That’s 44 pages of content supplied to you by our advertisers, donors and Patreon supporters. Please consider joining the sponsors to help support this neighborhood resource.

Our mission is comprehensive: We share news and feature stories about what’s happening in our community, columnists share their thoughts, advertisers let you know about services and products available in our area and we let you know what’s coming up each month. Special mention and thanks to cartoonist Paul and Jess the crossword puzzle maker who contibute their creativity.

This month, we are offering many more letters to the editor than usual. (Sorry for all the page jumps!) Since it is election season, I thought I’d give our readers a chance to tell their story and weigh in on current issues. All the letters printed here have been published on our website. Thank you to all who take the time to write.

I have also allowed exceptions to the length of the letters we published this month. Normally we limit the pieces to no more than 350 words in the paper, 500 online. Consider the election season the holiday season for opinions. Time to splurge.

The paper is also bigger because we have some new writers who have come forward and are adding their work to the local newspaper and website. It is important to me to encourage writers and I am so grateful to our talented contributors. Thank you all.

Soon our election season will be over and the contentious issues that have divided our neighborhoods (“Yes” on K! “No” on K!) will be settled for the time being.

While I don’t share my point of view about closing or opening the Upper Great Highway, I do admit I like the use of the compromise at Hallowween time to give kids a safe place to have some fun.

I was too busy at deadline to go myself, so I asked Lucas Lux, one of the event’s organizers, if he could share some pictures. His reply:

“Thanks for offering to include some photos from this year’s fourth annual Great Hauntway in the upcoming Sunset Beacon. Our team can provide photos.

Some fun facts you could include about SF’s largest Halloween celebration if you’d like:

• Over one mile of car-free trick-or-treating, when Halloween is the most dangerous day of the year for youth pedestrians.

• Over 130 community-hosted trick-or-treating stations.

• Over half a million pieces of candy handed out.

• Over 10,000 attendees.

• Live music from Carry Nation and the Sunset Community Marching Band.

• Nearly 150 volunteers from the community.”

Thank you, Lucas, and thanks to Boone Ashworth and David Enloe for their great pictures!

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

  1. How many SF youth were killed on Halloween? Zero. Anywhere.

The prop K advertising is disgusting and both districts voted it down.
