Press Release: Outer Sunset’s Gem and Mineral Society Celebrates 90 Years

From The San Francisco Gem and Mineral Society:

The San Francisco Gem and Mineral Society (SFGMS) is pleased to announce the celebration of its 90th year of existence, having been founded as the Northern California Mineral Society in January 1935. The SFGMS has published a monthly newsletter since its inception, known as “The Mineralog” since 1954, when the Society adopted its current name.

The Society has maintained a clubhouse in the Outer Sunset since 1957 that features a substantial library of literature, journals, and guidebooks, a publicly-accessible museum of mineral specimens, fossils and semi-precious gems, and workshops for its members.

The Society’s membership currently stands at over 300, with new members welcomed each month. The membership cost of $30 has remained unchanged since May 2004 (new members also pay a one-time $30 initiation fee).

The SFGMS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization dedicated to the study and enjoyment of geology, mineralogy, gemology, and lapidary and associated creative arts, for its membership and the community at large.

The SFGMS encourages study in these subjects through public outreach, field trips for the study and collecting of specimens, providing instruction in lapidary arts, and programming pertaining to the fields of mineralogy, earth sciences, and lapidary arts.

The club provides informal instruction in lapidary arts, jewelry-making, metal-smithing and related crafts seven days per week, with a stable of member-instructors available to support members in achieving their creative goals.

Monthly meetings are held at the Society’s clubhouse, featuring speakers spanning the spectrum of dedicated hobbyists to world-renowned experts. The general public is also welcome to discover the clubhouse and workshop, and shop items crafted by SFGMS members, at monthly open house events.

The SFGMS maintains reciprocal membership with other regional hobbyist clubs.
