Editor:
It seems as if the recall craze has hit high new benchmarks of numbers. California leads the pack with absolutely no lawful evidence necessary for a recall to occur except garnering enough signatures to get a recall petition on the ballot.
This has led to the procedure to recall our District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio with signature vultures hovering around the area. Although I didn’t agree with the ballot measure to permanently close the Upper Great Highway, the majority of S.F. voters did agree with the closure. Whether or not all procedures were dutifully followed prior to the measure being placed on the ballot, the basic fact is that it was placed on the ballot and voters had enough time to decide which way to vote. Even if there had been a lot of meetings and discussions beforehand, the measure most likely still would have wound up on the ballot.
Being a one issue voter and trying to recall anyone who doesn’t agree with just one aspect of that politicians slate is, in my view, a very shallow simple-minded voter who wants it 100% his or her way all the time. A complete waste of taxpayers money that would be better spent voting for a different candidate when the next election comes around.

Letter writer gravely misunderstands motivation of recall. The recall is not about disagreeing with one position. It is about a supervisor knowingly betraying his constituents in favor of ideological donors who don’t even live in San Francisco/ his district.
Joel is answering to a different master . . . and that is surely grounds for removing someone from the job of “representing D4 residents.” Doesn’t really get any more basic than that.
Cost is too bad, but you can’t really put a price on refusing to be used and abused by a Supervisor who’s actually working for someone else.

Exactly. We can’t trust Engardio to act in the basic safety interest of our district, full stop. He’s pandering constantly and telling lies as he breathes while claiming credit for things others invented. It’s literally the worst representation that the Sunset district has had of all the recent examples. Take a look at who is funding his defenses and it tells you all you need to know about the Breed PR that Billionaire dark money will always be able to afford without constraints to get what they want. We need to be the constraint on the City Family corruption. The Sunset deserves a real representative, not a paid liar who doesn’t listen to us and only takes credit for what we already were. Like Ocean Beach was already a park and doesn’t need a series of well-connected developers to ruin it, we don’t need Engardio’s lies and afterthoughts to enjoy OUR district. We can do better and time is of the essence. Compare the cost of the recall vs the unfunded mandates he’s already put us on the hook for, while neglecting our safety and basic rights. But sure, credit him for his brave stance on Algebra? Please.

I understand your concern, however you miss the issue here. The recall volunteers are not simple minded all or nothing voters; they are long time Westside residents with a vested interest in safety and lifestyle of the working class. This issue should never have gone to a City-wide vote…the impact on the Westside residents is/was paramount compared to the interests of those on the east side of the City.
The Sunset supervisor is being recalled because… well he lacks integrity. His actions are anything but transparent. He betrayed his constituents in an underhanded manner and deserves to take a walk of shame out of City hall. Your letter points out many of the ambiguities with Joel, not the least of which is his immoral behavior.
Sincerely,
Marty Murphy
