Press Release: Recent Richmond District Fires

The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) has responded to four outside fires in the Richmond District in the month of May.

The Arson Taskforce, a collaboration of SFFD and SFPD investigators, is working diligently to investigate these cases. At a recent community meeting, community members were given “a commitment from both our Fire Department and Police Department that they will catch whoever is responsible.” Currently, there is no immediate threat to San Francisco children or the public.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD Tipline at 415-575-4444 or text TIP411 and begin the message with “SFPD.”

What Happened:

  • On Thursday, May 1, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a 911 caller reported smoke from Lafayette Elementary School. SFFD crews on scene found an outside utility shed on fire and within five minutes, the fire was fully contained. No injuries or cause of the fire were reported. The fire did not spread to additional structures.
  • On Saturday, May 10, at approximately 11 p.m., a 911 caller reported a playground slide on fire at Lincoln Park Playground. SFFD crews responded and extinguished the fire within seven minutes. There are no reported injuries or a cause of the fire. The fire did not spread to additional structures.
  • On Sunday, May 18, at approximately 11:30 p.m., 911 calls reported a fire on the playground at Lafayette Elementary School. SFFD crews contained the fire within 15 minutes, and no injuries or causes were reported. The fire was contained to the outside play structure.
  • On Wednesday, May 21, at approximately 11 p.m., multiple 911 callers reported a fire at an outside play structure at Lincoln Park Playground. SFFD crews found the play structure and surrounding vegetation on fire. This fire was contained within 30 minutes, and no injuries or causes were reported.
  • These fires are being treated as suspicious, and the Arson Taskforce is working alongside other agencies to investigate the causes and bring this to an end.
  • Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD Tipline 415-575-4444 or text TIP411 and begin the message with “SFPD”
  • When the person or persons responsible are caught, they will be held fully liable.

Additional Information:

  • There is no immediate threat to children or the public.
  • Until further notice, the affected playgrounds are unsafe structures. For safety, please avoid them and do not allow your children to attempt to climb them.
