Then and Now

‘Then and Now’: 41st Avenue and Lincoln Way

Above: This view looking north at 41st Avenue and Lincoln Way was taken on March 8, 1912. It shows a long-gone transit waiting station. There was no entrance at the location into Golden Gate Park 113 years ago and there were no cars in sight in this photo – only a man standing on the dirt road. Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project/OpenSFHistory.

Below: This May 31 photo shows at least a dozen cars in what is now a very busy intersection. Today, 41st Avenue connects with Chain of Lakes Drive into Golden Gate Park which is one of only two direct connectors through the park between the Sunset and Richmond districts. Traffic lights replaced stop signs earlier this year. Photo by Michael Durand.

  1. Thanks for the photo but I can share photos taken on several different days at different times of day showing cars backed up on Chain of Lakes from 41st and Lincoln to north of JFK. Also on JFK itself of about 10-15 cars waiting there to turn south on Chain of Lakes as a result of the decision to close the Great Highway. Clearly simply installing a traffic light at 41st and Lincoln is not adequately mitigating the traffic mess.
