Due to numerous reported thefts at a store on 32nd Avenue, SFPD officers, with the Organized Retail Crime Unit, conducted a shoplifting abatement operation. An asset protection manager advised that this particular store had been a target for theft by both individuals and large groups. The store manager stated they wished to prosecute any individuals caught stealing regardless of the value of items stolen. This operation was conducted by both plainclothes and uniformed SFPD Officers.
At approximately 2 p.m., The asset protection manager observed an individual entering the store via surveillance cameras. The subject was surveilled for approximately 26 minutes. During that time the subject walked through several aisles, selecting and concealing merchandise. The suspect was observed selecting several items and placing them in his backpack. Plainclothes officers observed the subject walking up and down several aisles.
The plainclothes officer then walked outside the store and met with uniformed officers. The suspect was seen walking past all manned registers prior to leaving without attempting to pay for any items. The suspect exited the store and was detained and handcuffed by the uniformed officers. The suspect was informed that he was being placed under arrest. Officers observed the suspect’s backpack had a hole cut out from the back making it possible to easily conceal items into the backpack without opening the bag. The merchandise stolen totaled $445. A records check of the subject revealed he had several arrests in multiple states, with at least two convictions for theft in Florida.
The subject was booked.
