Letter to the Editor: Engardio Broke His Promises

Editor:

Supervisor Joel Engardio has been going around saying, “I’m trying to save my job,” as if he deserves sympathy votes. But this isn’t about a man desperate for work. This is someone who spent 12 years running nonstop in District 7, losing three times, before finally sliding into office in District 4. If this were truly about needing a job, he would have taken his responsibilities seriously and listened to Sunset District residents. Clearly, unemployment is not his concern.

What Engardio really wants is to save is his political career, not his “job.” If he cared about the role of supervisor, he would take his duties seriously. That means listening to residents, not prioritizing lobbyists and outside interests. If he cared, he would acknowledge the Sunset instead of dismissing us. If he cared, he would engage with his community instead of treating us as obstacles.

A four-year term does not give him the right to break promises and keep the job. A contract means accountability. Joel Engardio is not immune from consequences, even though he acts as if he can do anything without being held responsible.

No employee anywhere can insult their boss, ignore duties, or bypass accountability and still expect to keep their job. Yet Joel Engardio behaves as if the rules don’t apply to him, simply because he holds the title of supervisor.

It’s time to remind him this position is not an entitlement. He is a public servant, and when a public servant refuses to serve, he doesn’t get to stay in power. Joel Engardio has failed the Sunset District, and no amount of sympathy pleas will change that.

He will lose his job because he chose not to do it.

YES on A, Recall Engardio.

  1. I agree with Ms. Chu’s points about Supervisor Engardio. He has failed to listen to, cooperate with, or represent the majority of his constituents. He has resorted to classifying D4 residents who are in disagreement with his policies as an isolated group he feels comfortable publicly calling derogatory names. This is not behavior befitting an elected public official and we should not have to put up with one more day of it.

For those saying the recall election is prohibitively expensive, the Department of Elections has so far not published the cost, but whatever the final sum may be, as of now, they have not needed to rely on new money to fund what has been done so far and we’ve all received our ballots. They have advised, “We are still seeking to complete as much of the work as possible within our current staffing and funding levels.” Keep in mind that Joel Engardio’s billionaire donors, to which he will be beholden for their financial support, have given him well over half a million dollars to keep him in office despite the fact they don’t live in District 4 and can’t personally vote for him.

For those thinking it would be better to wait for the next election to vote him out, even if he’s voted out in November 2026, he will remain in office through January 2027, more than a year and 4 months after the September 16, 2025, election day. We cannot afford to be unrepresented for that amount of time. Vote Yes on Prop A to recall Engardio.

  2. Continue to speak the truth Ms. Chu! When a politician refuses to honor his word and refuses to aknowledge his own words, there is lost of trust and integrity. Joel told too many of his direct supporters and voters. These same people are justifiably upset. All they wanted was a mitigated compromise for the community that was working. Note to politicians, campaign funding does not equate to what is right. Be true to your supporters and people you represent.

  3. Engardio has raised over $800,000 just for defending his recall. The man has some deep pockets behind him that do not reside in the district! What are those deep pockets intentions for the neighborhood thru him!?! Engardio also put a kid in his ad spreading lies about HE is the one putting algebra back in middle school. Anyone who has kids in SF school district will know that is far from the truth. Engardio again just demonstrated how much he likes to bend the truth. D4 does NOT need a supervisor with such low moral values.
