Letter to the Editor: Recalling Engardio is About Accountability

Editor:

Supervisor Joel Engardio wants voters to believe the recall is about one issue – the Upper Great Highway. His ads scream: “Signing the recall petition will not reopen the Great Highway.” But the truth is, the recall is about far more; it’s about accountability, honesty, and respect for District 4.

Engardio bypassed Sunset residents by forcing a costly citywide ballot instead of holding town halls and listening to his own constituents. He misled the public on costs, erased lobbyist meetings from his calendar and let his office shrug off responsibility by blaming “unpaid interns.” Meanwhile, he had no time to meet with neighbors but plenty of time for lobbyists.

The Upper Great Highway compromise worked, balancing commuter safety during the week and recreation on weekends. Engardio could have asked to extend it, but instead he ended it early. He insists the City might “take the compromise away,” yet he had no problem taking it away himself. That’s not leadership, that’s manipulation.

Even worse, his supporters have gone so far as to say District 4 has “too many Asians.” This divisive rhetoric does not represent the Sunset community, and Engardio’s silence on this only makes it worse.

The recall isn’t about reopening a road. It’s about holding a supervisor accountable for lying to get elected, silencing his own district, and undermining democracy. District 4 deserves a leader who listens, not one who points fingers, dodges responsibility and divides the community.

Vote YES on A. Recall Joel Engardio. The Sunset deserves better.

Raymond Wong, Outer Sunset resident.

  1. I originally thought that Joel was a starry eyed nerd. But this letter indicates that he was sneaky and manipulative to the detriment of D4 residents. The advocates of Sunset Dunes consist of some idealists and bikers. But some are players of dirty politics.I don’t reside in D4 but am concerned about the wrecking of neighborhoods and the city with the aim of making San Francisco a glorified industrial park.High rises, congestion due to restricted driving lanes, poor bus service and the diminished quality of life have no place in San Francisco. 2. He tried to delete from the SF BOS public record of meetings, the OFFICIAL RECORD that we all own as citizens and taxpayers, a meeting he had with Google lawyers (and possibly others?) right before sneakily putting his dishonest charade of a land grab times deregulation that is Prop K onto the ballot at the very last second.

The tactic was used to give no time for opponents, -RESIDENTS-. the -CONSTITUENTS-, and people directly impacted by his sham proposal, any time to organize or even analyze what was being done. But redacting the public record, is that not a crime or at least an infraction, a violation of the Sunshine Ordinance if not other parts of the City Charter and bylaws? Whatever it is, it’s shady BS.

When he stripped away rent control protections from ADU’s, he took away from low-and-middle income renters any hope of that program – which was designed and voted into law _specifically_ to benefit them – providing any residential stability. That was his solo contribution to that legislation, to screw lower income renters citywide. Then he comes around and has a PR man pretend he’s got our interests at heart? Please, spare us, Sam Singer and Jen Nossokoff. We’ve heard your BS song and dance routine plenty enough.

Engardio is a liar and has never admitted or acknowledged what he did was wrong.

It’s that simple – You can never trust them again because they are far too comfortable lying directly to your collective faces. This city has seen enough of that style of leadership after decades of Breed and Ed Lee, it’s unacceptable. Enough.

The money has been spent. Make it count, vote yes on A. No more liars.

Restore public accountability one vote at a time.
