CLEMENT STREET ART WALK

DIWALI AT THE OUTER SUNSET FARMERS MARKET

FACING THE MOON”

The world premiere of “Facing the Moon: Songs of the Diaspora” with the Del Sol Quartet and Genny Lim takes place at the Presidio Theatre, 99 Moraga Ave. on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. Long-time Richmond District residents the Del Sol Quartet present a world premiere multimedia event in collaboration with San Francisco’s first ever poet laureate of Chinese American heritage, Genny Lim. FELTON TECH SQUAD

Felton’s Tech Squad provides free basic tech support for older adults and people with disabilities in the Richmond District. Ask questions regarding how to navigate your smartphone, tablet or laptop. “Workshop: Clay Planter Pots.” Create a simple and beautiful air-dry clay planter pot without a kiln and decorate it in a unique, personal way. For ages 13–18. Space is limited. On Oct. 9, participants will mold planter pots out of non-toxic air-dry clay. On Oct. 16, participants will focus on decorating the planter pots with provided materials. Cantonese-speaking Tech Squad members are available to assist, Friday, Oct. 10, 1:30-3:00 p.m.

“Celebration: Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.” Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival with captivating live performances by Dansen American Academy. This event offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the essence of Chinese culture. Delight in the elegance of Chinese traditional dance and the diverse expressions of Chinese multi-ethnic dance. Experience the serene art of the Chinese tea ceremony. The highlight of the celebration is the play “Moon Goddess Chang’e to the Moon,” which brings the legendary tale of Chang’e’s ascent to the moon to life. Also, you are invited to participate in other activities such as riddle contest, mahjong playing and sing-along traditional songs about the moon. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2-5 p.m.

“Performance: San Francisco Symphony’s Community Chamber.” Enjoy an afternoon of music at the Richmond Branch with the San Francisco Symphony’s Community Chamber Concert program. This program brings small ensembles to community spaces across San Francisco. These free concerts are an opportunity to get to know SF Symphony musicians and see them perform in an intimate setting. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2-3 p.m.

“Performance: Sidewalk Series.” Celebrate the warm, lazy days of fall in San Francisco with the Richmond Branch Sidewalk Music Series. On Oct. 25, join us at the Ninth Avenue steps for something completely different. Oakland’s DIY Free Key Choir will perform all original numbers written by the chorus members themselves. They will be joined by Megan March, California College of the Arts graduate student and Bay Area musician, who will explore percussive sounds on her handmade, ceramic drums. Some chairs provided. Tutorial: Tech Help. Tech coaches are available to help with basic questions about technology, such as computer tasks or how to use your phone or tablet. Performance: Navy Band Southwest Woodwind Quintet. The Prevailing Winds Woodwind Quintet blends the individual sounds of the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn to create a unique quintet sound. The quintet performs works from various genres including classical, romantic, Latin, Americana, marches and contemporary. Presented as part of the Fleet Week Neighborhood Concert Series. Social: Plant Swap. Bring a plant, take a plant, bring your seedlings, divisions or cuttings to swap with other gardeners. All types of plants are welcome: succulents, house plants, flowers, ground covers or wild grasses. Bring cuttings, starts, bulbs or full-sized plants. Tutorial: Smartphone Class for Older Adults 60+. Self-Help for the Elderly’s training program is ideal for those seeking to enhance their technical skills. The program focuses on hands-on training, allowing participants to become proficient in using their smartphones and tablets. Bring your device along and prepare to become an expert! Topic: Camera. The 4 Star Theater will be playing free family-friendly movies every weekend morning at 10 a.m. for the rest of 2025, thanks to a generous grant from the Baker Street Foundation. The films selected will cover a wide range from family classics to newer hits straight from theaters. Reservations will be first-come-first-served when the box office opens 30 minutes before the screening on the day of the show. Come early for our free specially curated cartoon pre-shows. Showtimes of the film later in the day will be regularly priced.

FREE WALKING GROUPS FOR SENIORS

Join the friendly San Francisco 55+ Neighborhood Walks. These free walks are leisurely, not vigorous and accommodating for seniors with various walking abilities. To sign up, go to meetup.com/sf-55-neighborhood-walking-groups. You can see who else is walking. You are also welcome if you just show up in person. The walks meet weekly, except when it rains and sometimes on holidays – check the Meetup link for the latest updates. The walks vary from one hour to two hours and you can leave at any time.

• Tuesday walks start at noon at Angelina’s Cafe, 6000 California St., at 22nd Avenue in the Richmond District and goes to Lands End and back.

• Friday walks start at 10 a.m. in front of the Forest Hill Club House at 391 Magellan St. and tours that beautiful neighborhood.

• Sunday walks start at 1 p.m. at Java Beach by the Zoo at 2650 Sloat Blvd. in the Outer Sunset and goes along Sunset Dunes from Sloat Boulevard to Judah Street and back. Dogs are allowed at the Ocean Beach walk.

• Golden Gate Park Walk for 55+ Seniors: We meet every Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Pool of Enchantment next to the front of the de Young Museum. The route varies each week. Come get fine exercise and meet friendly people. If you have questions, write to freeseniorwalk@gmail.com.

Every walk is located where there is a public bathroom either at the starting place or on the route.

LOCAL AUTHOR WINS AWARDS FOR GRAPHIC NOVELS

Local graphic novelist, Dr. Kenny Loui, was recognized at this year’s Readers’ Favorite

Book Awards on Sept. 1, taking home the gold medal for Best Graphic Novel for his latest manga memoir, “Dad vs. The World.” The fourth book in Loui’s “Life Lessons from a UFO Catcher” series of autobiographical comics, “Dad vs. The World” recounts the author’s childhood memories with his father, while growing up in San Francisco and his young adult experiences in South Korea. On June 26, “Dad vs. The World” also won the silver medal in the Young Adult

Multicultural Nonfiction category and “Life Lessons from a UFO Catcher” was awarded the bronze medal in the Nonfiction Book Series category in the 29th annual Independent Publisher Book Awards. Loui’s debut graphic novel series, published between 2023 and 2025, comprises of “Life Lessons from a UFO Catcher,” volumes 1 and 2, “There is No Shrimp… And Other Lies My Mother Told Me,” and “Dad vs. The World.” The graphic memoirs are published by UFO Comics, written by Loui and illustrated by Yamawe. RICHMOND RESIDENT HONORED FOR VOICEOVER WORK

Dr. Kenny Loui was honored for his voiceover acting work in this year’s One Voice Awards and Telly Awards. Dr. Loui was among 10 nominees for the OVA’s Voiceover Newcomer of the Year Award, recognized as one of the top new U.S. and Canada-based voice actors who debuted in the last year, at the OVA awards gala in Dallas, Texas, on Aug. 23. One of Loui’s projects, “Fashion Police V,” also won the bronze award for Best Action & Adventure Film in the 46th Annual Telly Awards on May 20. Loui voiced the villainous D.D., the antagonist of “Fashion Police V,” an animated short film from Dexta Studios. Sunset Mercantile’s first brick-and-mortar location is an incubating platform for local merchants and makers. Located in the heart of the Inner Sunset, Sunset Mercantile’s Emporium is an extension of its popular outdoor events.
