‘Then and Now’: Irving Street and Eighth Avenue

Special thanks to photographer Paul Mansfield for supplying this month’s “Then and Now” photos. The picture on the left was taken by Paul when he first moved to the Sunset District in the late 1990’s (“probably 1998”). It’s a great black-and-white snapshot of the southeast corner of Irving Street and Eighth Avenue. The photo on the right was taken by Paul from the same spot 27 years later, on Sept. 13. Paul can be found at the Sunset Mercantile Emporium on that corner at 653 Irving St. selling cameras, photo equipment, film and more alongside other small businesses that share the space. (This is the first feature in years where we didn’t use great historical photos from the Western Neighborhoods Project/OpenSFHistory. We are very grateful to WNP for sharing its great pictures with us. Thank you.)
