Then and Now

‘Then and Now’: The Cliff House

Above: The second Cliff House was built in the Victorian style in 1896 by Adolph Sutro. This view of the San Francisco landmark from Ocean Beach was taken in 1906, one year before it burned to the ground. The photo is the right-hand portion of a stereo view. Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project/OpenSFHistory.

Below: This photo of the currently vacant Cliff House was taken on Nov. 29, 2025. Neither horses nor gentlemen wearing top hats were on the beach that day, but Bethany and Luke Armstrong agreed to be in the “now” picture. They came to San Francisco from near Davis, Calif., to escape the tule fog in the Central Valley. Photo by Michael Durand.
