Fighting Senior Scams Together

In my conversations with neighbors, I often hear concerns about scams and fraud targeting seniors. Many of us have seen these scams impact our loved ones, and while they may seem like just a nuisance, they can also carry serious financial and emotional consequences.

Senior Scam Stopper Seminar

Scammers are also becoming more sophisticated. From convincing phone calls to in-person schemes, they often target older adults by exploiting trust and creating a sense of urgency. That’s why I believe it’s so important to bring trusted, essential information directly into our neighborhoods, and why I’m hosting a free Senior Scam Stopper Seminar on Thursday, April 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park (1199 Ninth Ave.). I’m excited to have several state and local agencies joining us, including the Contractors State License Board, Department of Insurance and San Francisco District Attorney’s office. They’ll walk us through some of the most common scams we’re seeing right now, such as contractor fraud, identity theft, Medicare scams and mail fraud. We’ll hear about practical tips on how to spot red flags and highlight resources available to those who have been targeted by scams.

This event is about empowerment. Scammers count on people feeling isolated or unsure. But when we have the right information, each and every one of us is much harder to take advantage of.

Helping Neighbors

Supporting our neighbors also means making sure they can access the services they need. Every day, my district office helps residents navigate state agencies and cut through bureaucratic red tape. In 2025 alone, we received hundreds of requests for help with unemployment insurance, disability insurance, paid family leave and other state claims. Thanks to my team’s hard work, we helped constituents secure roughly $1.2 million in benefits. This is real support for families and seniors, and money back in their pockets when it’s needed more than ever.

If you’re having trouble with a state agency, there’s a good chance my office can help! My team regularly assists with issues involving the Employment Development Department (EDD), Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Medi-Cal and Covered California, veterans’ benefits, state taxes, consumer complaints and more. We can also help you stay informed about legislation, listen to your views on bills working their way through the legislature or connect you with state resources.

If you’re not sure where to start, please don’t hesitate to reach out. My office is here to serve you. You can email us anytime at Assemblymember.Stefani@Assembly.ca.gov or call us at 415-557-2312.

I hope to see many of you on April 9 at our free Senior Scam Stopper Seminar. Staying informed is one of the best ways we can protect ourselves and our neighbors.
