NEIGHBORHOOD INFORMATION
The Richmond District is located in the northwest corner of San Francisco, nestled in between Presidio National Park and the city’s Golden Gate Park. The neighborhood, which includes Sea Cliff and Laurel and Presidio Heights, is home to about 80,000 people. About half of Richmond residents are of Asian ancestry, primarily of Chinese and Korean descent. There is also a large Irish population and many recently arrived Russian immigrants.
Several vibrant commercial areas, including California Street, Clement Street and Geary Boulevard, serve the neighborhood. The 1,400 merchants and small offices in the Richmond District offer a wide range of goods and services.
Local landmarks include the Cliff House and the Beach Chalet at Ocean Beach, the V.A. Hospital at Fort Miley, University of San Francisco and numerous holy houses, including Temple Emanuel, St. John’s Orthodox Church and St. John’s Presbyterian Church. There are numerous attractions in Golden Gate Park, including an American Bison pen, M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, California Academy of Sciences, Strybing Arboretum, the oldest children’s playground west of the Mississippi River and a 9-hole golf course.

When Alexandra Mitchell, the owner and principal fine art conservator at ACT Art Conservation, learned that the Cliff House’s art works and memorabilia were slated to be auctioned off in mid-March, she knew something had to be done.
On July 20, the SF Board of Supervisors unanimously passed legislation making the Shared Spaces program permanent. The decision changes the nature of the parklets from an emergency response to the pandemic to an ongoing part of San Francisco’s streetscape.
Local artist, Dyanna Dimick, assembles sundry materials and mediums in fashioning her work. Her compositions are as unusual as her approach to art. Acrylic paint holds found materials and works as a complement to the elements, and “it’s an easy clean up.”
The San Francisco Unified School District’s (SFUSD) plan to cover the controversial “Life of George Washington” murals at his namesake high school in the Richmond District was derailed after a judge ruled that the way the district went about it violated state law.
Investigators locate multiple firearms, narcotics, and several rounds of ammunition.
The band will present 11 free concerts between August 1 and October 3 in addition to Labor Day, September 6, 2021.
