A plan to renovate the South Sunset Clubhouse, which serves as an important community hub for neighborhood seniors, is one step closer to becoming a reality after the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission approved a conceptual design, San Francisco Recreation and Park Department officials announced today.
The 1700 block of 22nd Avenue, between Noriega and Moraga streets, was jolted by a huge blast on the morning of Feb. 9 when a house exploded into a three-alarm fire resulting in one death, three injuries that required hospitalization and damage to 18 homes and several cars.
A two-year study of the Sunset District surveyed residents and produced a report prioritizing strategies to address the district’s needs concerning supporting housing, small business and commercial corridors, as well as neighborhood services.

The Starship House, an eccentric creation of artist James T. Kirk that spills out onto 46th Avenue, features a house full of various types of arts and crafts. Mar developed the Sunset Forward initiative as a community-centered way to directly gather input from District 4 residents. Their concerns, Mar explained, will help him prioritize the work he will do with other city agencies to address common concerns.
The first-ever Outer Sunset Farmers Market and Mercantile on July 5 couldn’t have had better weather. The typical summer fog gave way to a warm and sunny day. It was the perfect start to what many neighbors hope will be a long-lasting tradition.
