After moving to the Sunset seven months ago, Laurie Vázquez Scolari decided that the outside of her white and black house on Taraval Street and 45th Avenue, which neighbors refer to as the “See’s Candy house,” needed some extra color. Inspired by her mother’s immigration journey from Puebla, México, to California, Laurie decided to dedicate a mural to her mother as a tribute to her story, culture and strength while also making a larger statement about immigration laws.
Voters elected Joel to bring balance, accountability, and a results-driven approach to City Hall. He has delivered on that promise over and over again.

Voters who are unhappy with his decisions will have the opportunity to express their belief at the ballot box in the regularly scheduled 2026 election. This seems to me the better way to go.
San Franciscans have been abuzz these last several months over the controversial permanent closure of a section of the west side’s Upper Great Highway. Enough so, that a recall effort has launched against District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio for his role. But from the looks of it, average residents see little evidence a recall is being undertaken.
Since Jan. 20, we have seen outsized attacks on the values we hold dear as San Franciscans, including protections for our vulnerable communities, our immigrant community and our LGBTQ+ community, especially our transgender youth. I am proud of our San Francisco city and community leaders, who have come together to denounce these hateful policies and solidified our City’s commitment to protecting our vulnerable and marginalized communities.
