We need electric light for human safety, comfort and health, but lighting up the night sky for amusement or displays should be kept to a minimum. It’s especially important that artificial light be kept to a minimum in our urban parks. At night, our city parks can be oases of dark in the otherwise unrelenting glare of electric light that engulfs most of our City.
Ben Davis, who is responsible for bringing us the Bay Lights, is looking for more money. $11 million is needed to keep the lights on and he’s out there trying to raise it. Davis and his organization, Illuminate, put lights up all over the place, especially in Golden Gate Park.
The controversy about the 90-foot-tall stadium lights at St. Ignatius College Preparatory high school in the Outer Sunset is on again, since an appeals court ruled that the City was wrong to exempt it from environmental review.

Saint Ignatius College Preparatory and SF Planning will now be required to implement an environmental review on the impacts of these stadium lights and the attendant noise, aesthetics, and public safety aspects under CEQA regulations.
What, and who, is Illuminate the Arts? It wouldn’t be a big deal except that they are taking over our public spaces, causing light pollution and using corporate dollars to influence City government.
A new art installation by San Francisco artist Charles Gadeken titled “Entwined” sits in Peacock Meadow in the east end of the park next to the Conservatory of Flowers. The art installation honors Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary and will run from Dec. 10 to Feb. 28.
At some point in the future, once activity limits that were put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic are loosened, the Saint Ignatius College Preparatory School (SI) will host sporting events on its fields again. If all goes according to plan, students will be able to stay on the field later, thanks to new stadium lights.
I represent the Saint Ignatius Neighborhood Association and we are strongly opposed to the proposed project at Saint Ignatius College Preparatory.
If we truly want to celebrate the 150th birthday of Golden Gate Park, we should honor nature and the Park by leaving it as dark as safety allows for one year,
