Sunset District Supervisors Joel Engardio (D4) and Myrna Melgar (D7) were responsible for placing Proposition K on the ballot last year, which asked voters citywide whether they wished to have a new park out at the beach, thus rendering the permanent closure of the Upper Great Highway fait accompli. They did this even though the residents of District 4 and 7 overwhelmingly opposed the closure, which would massively disrupt many of their daily lives.
Once you build an ADU, your SFR is now a two-family dwelling or “multiunit” property. All the ADUs are now legal units. Not only will your property be re-appraised at a significant increase in value with an increase in property tax, but the Rent Board will now resume operation of your new unit(s) as well as your old unit.
A ribbon-cutting marked the completion of the project’s first phase, which added improvements such as a National Fitness Campaign fitness court with exercise equipment; two new picnic tables and benches; new ADA parking at the John Muir Drive lot; new signage along the asphalt trails; and landscaping upgrades including tree maintenance and new tree plantings.
To increase housing density on the City’s west side, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors made it easier for single-family homeowners to add rooms or up to four housing units on their single property lots.
In a historic election, that took place during a pandemic and included an all-time-high number of mail-in votes, it was unclear how long it would take for results of local races to become definitive. However, District 7’s (D-7) new supervisor, Myrna Melgar, secured her victory on Nov. 4, the day after the election, while District 5 (D-5) incumbent Dean Preston retained his seat in what was a landslide victory compared to the razor-thin margin he held to win the 2019 special election.
