I’m not anti-music. I’m anti-making two residential districts bear the cost of parties we didn’t ask for. The City should move these festivals downtown, where the energy and the business are needed most.

Next month will mark the 17th year that the Outside Lands Festival (OSL) will be held in Golden Gate Park. In 2019, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to extend the contract between Another Planet Entertainment (APE) and the City of San Francisco until 2031.

Eyes turned to the Richmond District Aug. 9-11, as nearby Golden Gate Park held one of the largest and most beloved music festivals in the United States, according to TimeOut.

Western Neighborhoods Project Executive Director Nicole Meldahl looks over the glittering scene. Sequined dresses and metallic shirts glimmer like tiny stars under the dim theater lights. Seltzer cans glint as they click open; cake is passed around on paper plates along with a sprinkle of laughter. Smiles sparkle through the room as guests reminisce about the old Playland days.
The post-Outside Lands (OSL) concert may be fun for the privileged few who can afford the tickets, but for the residents of the Sunset and Richmond districts, the neighbors of Golden Gate Park, it’s no fun at all. Another week of noise, blocked roads, traffic, litter and disruption is added to the five weeks Another Planet Entertainment (APE) is already occupying our neighborhood.

The promoter of Outside Lands has so magnanimously granted us residents of the Richmond and Sunset $35,000 each in so-called Community Benefit Funds from Outside Lands profits. Researched that the Richmond itself has about 35,000 residents, so each of us get a “benefit’ of exactly ONE DOLLAR for the lost weekend of noise and air pollution, heavy traffic, etc. Can assume the Sunset residents “benefit” about the same.
We are opposed to holding the post-Outside Lands (OSL) concert in Golden Gate Park (GGP). The post-OSL concert may be fun for the privileged few who can afford the tickets, but for the residents of the Sunset and Richmond Districts, the neighbors of GGP, it’s no fun at all.
