On Feb. 18, SFMTA is set to rubber-stamp the vague, unfunded and reckless “Biking and Rolling Plan.” This 250+ page document proposes an aggressive expansion of bike lanes, “slow streets,” and other ambiguous measures, all requiring the drastic removal of street parking and driving lanes.
When the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) asked Sunset District residents for ideas to improve traffic safety in the Inner Sunset, the resulting post-it notes lining the walls of the SF County Fair Building on Nov. 18 provided a diverse collection of opinions.
Running stop signs has become so common in the Richmond that it’s almost accepted as part of daily life. But this is a problem we can no longer afford to ignore.
We need to shift our focus from reactive measures, such as increased policing, to proactive solutions that address the root causes of traffic violence. By redesigning our streets, we can create an environment where safety is built into the infrastructure, rather than relying solely on individual behavior.
Collectively we have prioritized the movement of vehicles over the safety and livability of our City. What is left for us is to decide whether we want these tragedies to continue.
