‘A Shot of Salvation’: The Bitter End, by Deno Gellepes

The Bitter End, a Shot of Salvation

By Deno Gellepes

From across the street, The Bitter End looks like the type of dive bar you go to when you lose your job, or better yet, when you lose your marriage, and “Dear Doctor” by The Rolling Stones doesn’t quite cure the pain anymore.

But unlike fake tech stocks, your ex, or a cliche dive bar, The Bitter End actually has some soul

The Bitter End (right) has been a staple on Clement Street in the Inner Richmond District for decades. Photo by Michael Durand.

Upon stepping inside, you’ll discover an abundance of seating options that cater to parties of all sizes. Toward the back is a weathered but inviting bar, surrounded by an eclectic collection of 49ers, Giants and rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia adorning the walls. Upstairs, strands of Christmas lights illuminate the panoramic view below, where two pool tables and dartboards await.

After a Boddingtons Ale, a shot of whiskey, and Muddy Waters playing overhead, you’ll start to see what I mean by soul

The bar offers a full liquor, beer and wine selection and a kitchen that serves great pub grub seven days a week. Don’t let that last part slip past you, not many places like this still serve food nor do so with the extensive menu that this Clement street gem does. Remarkably, for less than $25, you can have a cold beer and savor a perfectly cooked steak accompanied by a selection of two sides – unheard of in this town.

The service here has always been fantastic. The bar, kitchen, and door staff are always top-notch and they exude the friendly, neighborhood vibe Richmond District residents are accustomed to. You know, the kind that makes you feel like you’re outside the city, but even better knowing that you’re not.

A dive bar doesn’t always have to mean that springtime takes the long way around, and The Bitter End proves as much time and time again.
