Press Release: Third Annual ‘Great Hauntway’ Planned for Oct. 29

Friends of Great Highway Park Announce the Third Annual GREAT HAUNTWAY

Over one mile of safe and scenic family-friendly Halloween trick or treating along the Upper Great Highway, Sunday, Oct. 29, 1-4 p.m.

The Friends of Great Highway Park has announced the return of The Great Hauntway, San Francisco’s largest car-free Halloween trick-or-treating event. The Great Hauntway is a free, family-friendly community Halloween event featuring more than a mile of trick-or-treating, kids’ activities and live music from Carry Nation. The Great Hauntway will take place on Sunday, Oct. 29, 1-4 p.m on the scenic Upper Great Highway between Judah and Taraval streets.

Halloween is one of the most dangerous days of the year for youth pedestrians. The Great Hauntway was created in 2021 to provide kids with a safe, car-free and fun place to celebrate Halloween with a scenic coastal backdrop. The event drew thousands of participants and is now an annual event. Parents are invited to bring their children for trick-or-treating and other kid-friendly activities, including pumpkin decorating, big bubbles, four bounce houses and more.

All community members are invited to set up a decorated table for children to trick or treat. RSVP at http://www.greathauntway.com to decorate a table, hand out treats to kids, bring kids to trick or treat, or volunteer at the event.  Awards will be given to the best decorated trick or treat tables. Information is also available there regarding allergy-safe trick-or-treating, transportation to the event, and Rec. and Park guidelines for table decorations.

This year’s Great Hauntway is made possible by generous support from Avenue Greenlight and community businesses including Black Bird Bookstore, Bay to Breakers and Go Silverback.

The Friends of Great Highway Park is an all-volunteer group focused on making the most of the City’s beautiful coastline for all San Franciscans to enjoy.

  1. Would you please respect the fragile dunes and the median. Stay on the highway. The continuous trampling on the dunes over almost 4 years has killed vegetation that was laboriously planted 30 years ago. Please keep dogs, kids, adults, bikes off the dunes. This is a protected area for wildlife. Honor the environment.
