Letter to the Editor: Let Engardio Finish His Term

Editor:

You don’t have to agree with every decision Supervisor Joel Engardio has made to recognize that he has delivered real results for District 4 and is deeply committed to continuing that work.

He has been a champion for public safety, securing more officers for our neighborhood at a time when San Francisco is struggling with police staffing shortages.

He has helped clean up homeless encampments with innovative strategies like angled parking, which prevents RVs from lining up and creating public safety concerns.

He has fought for education, helping restore algebra in middle schools and advocating to keep merit-based admissions at Lowell High School.

He has supported small businesses by launching the Sunset Night Market, one of the City’s most successful new events! He has also been committed to lowering barriers to entrepreneurship by cutting bureaucratic red tape and has consistently voted for or sponsored legislation to reduce fees and ease permitting burdens for small businesses. After all, thriving small businesses are what make District 4 such a special place to be.

Beyond his policy accomplishments, Engardio’s approach to leadership is one all elected officials should study. He is incredibly accessible, personally responding to constituent emails and regularly engaging with residents and business owners. He is kind, grounded, thoughtful, and practical, qualities we need more of in political life.

This recall isn’t about bad leadership; it’s about a small group of people overblown in their upset over one issue. Engardio was elected to serve all of District 4, and he’s doing exactly that, effectively and with integrity. Let him finish his term so he can continue delivering on safer streets, better schools, more housing, and vibrant small businesses.

  1. I must have missed the decision by the thousands in Sunset district to have Mar speak for us all. Clearly she doesn’t, nor does she have the slightest grasp of the divisiveness that was stoked and energized

  2. I must have missed the decision by the Sunset district to have Mar speak for and summarize the reasons of the many who find Sup. Engardio wanting. It’s not about one issue, just ask any of them. And for many, they found that Engardio anything BUT incredibly accessible and his approach to leadership worth copying. Perhaps Mar missed the post-election maps showing that NOT ONE SINGLE PRECINCT on the entire west side of the city voted for Prop K. If as Mar claims, that Engardio was elected to represent all in his district, he failed miserably, and despite his claims to have knocked on thousands of doors, he couldn’t possibly have done that and so glaringly misread the room. That is failed leadership, combined with his failure to hold the countless open houses, town halls etc promised by the city in order to gage public sentiments. He may indeed be kind, but his one sided campaign to push through Prop K was anything but thoughtful.

In closing, for a man so strong an advocate of the right of the voters to decide, he’s seemingly not adverse to spending much of his time and others, and far more money that the grass roots Recall campaign, all to quash the very same right of the voters (this time truly those he’s elected to represent) to have their voices heard.

  3. Gee, such similar verbiage to the recent flurry of anti-recall letters. Most making the same talking points put out by the Stand with Joel organization. The same points (night markets, algebra, etc) which are either minor accomplishments (the night markets, marching bands) compared to the major harm the closure of the GH has caused or taking credit for work done by many many people (algebra). Not to mention not one word of his work to recall the Board of Education members which ironically proves that Engardio is not opposed to recalls at all (or only when they are directed at him…) And no mention of the red ink the city is now facing which makes it less likely that there will be city funding to make the park (which Prop K did not provide for) except for the shadowy Friends of SF Park and Rec and Friends of the GH “Park” who apparently are pouring money into “art”, benches, porta potties that blow over in storms, etc. Efforts that are splashy but don’t account for the costs of maintaining a “park” such as increased policing to fight vandalism, garbage pickup, and homeless encampments on a now mostly empty road (very little use as a “park” except on weekends with good weather. Not at night. Not in bad weather.

    • Christina- It seems unlikely that any park anywhere gets used as much at night or in bad weather, being that parks are outside, right? The fact is, the GH Park has been busy every day since it opened; people of all ages and colors are enjoying it and it’s going to stay, regardless of your complaints, so you can decide to continue feasting on your anger, or join those enjoying it.

    • Lian –

Did you forget about being transparent already?

You’re being PAID to run his anti-recall campaign.

So, of course, you would agree with Mar’s letter! Probably wrote or edited it too. C’mon now. Be transparent.

  4. Interesting perspective from the author, however they failed to take into consideration the evidence that that Joel is a poor leader: 1) 2/3’s of his constituents and in fact the supermajority of entire Westside of San Francisco voted against the closing of a major artery for traffic (20,000 vehicles per day). 2) We now have news stories, TV commentators, recall campaign, lawsuits, civil unrest, civil disobedience, increased traffic congestion in the neighborhood, increased safety concerns and list goes on. 3) If he was a good leader: showed integrity, care and concern for his constitutes and their daily lives as working class citizens then we would not be where we are today. Support the recall and get rid of this unscrupulous man.

    Sincerely,

    Marty Murphy

  5. “This recall isn’t about bad leadership”

You consider lying and bending over for Downtown Billionaires “good leadership”?

Well, 65% of us don’t. And we don’t elect you our spokesperson, nor Sam Singer.

    • Nice use of homophobic language, mealy, a great example you are setting. Also, you recall folks seem to fail to understand that “agreeing with” and being “beholden to” are not the same thing.

  7. Engardio received a total of $200,000 from only 3 wealthy donors, none of whom live in District 4. It makes one wonder why people Joel cannot represent are so interested in keeping our D4 Supervisor in office. Their properties are located in Pac Heights, the Marina and Russian Hill. What has he promised them if he gets to a higher political position or if someone he knows higher up will do something for them?
