‘Then and Now’: 16th Avenue and Irving Street

Above: Union 76 Station, circa 1940. In its heyday, the gas station at 16th Avenue and Irving Street provided gasoline and automobile servicing, as well as new and used Pontiac cars. Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project/OpenSFHistory.

Below: This May 2, 2025, photo shows the former service station is now an empty lot. Perhaps a future “Then and Now” photo will show an electric car charging station, a new business, a multi-million dollar home or some other structure or feature unimaginable today in the space. 1. This was an amazing garage I used for a very long time., he was a classic and a great find. I often thought the building itself wouldv’e made a great coffee shop or ice cream shop, but sure the ground is toxic and required major work. Too bad the building was torn down .
