Press Release: Sunset Dunes Open House July 19

From the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department:

Over the past few months, Sunset Dunes has started to feel more like a true park with art, signage, seating, and native plantings bringing new life to the coast.

Those improvements are just the beginning. Now, it’s time for you to help shape what comes next.

Join SF Rec. and Park on Saturday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to noon at Sunset Dunes and Judah for the first official Sunset Dunes Open House. This event is the beginning of a public engagement process to explore both near-term upgrades and long-term park improvements.

RSVP here to help Rec. and Park track participation

What to Expect:

  • Small group conversations with Rec. and Park and CMG Landscape Architecture.
  • Interactive boards and an online survey to share your ideas and feedback.
  • A chance to learn more about what’s possible in 2025 and beyond.

This first phase of the Sunset Funds community engagement process will continue through the end of this year, helping to prepare for a full vision and planning process commencing in 2026. Every idea, comment, and perspective shared along the way will help shape the future of this space.

Can’t make the open house? An online survey will be available for those who want to engage digitally – stay tuned. A second open house will also be held on Sept. 17.

We hope you’ll join us in building a park that reflects the city’s creativity, care, and love for its coastline.

  1. I wish that they would convert City Hall into a Sunset Dunes. Isn’t City Hall political recreation? Think of a basketball court in every Supervisor’s office? Or a shooting gallery in the Mayor’s Office? Perhaps, we should make playground areas into affordable housing.

Sunset Dunes sprang out of twisted thinking which will result in traffic congestion to the delight of those who hate automobiles.

What will happen when a bicyclist runs over an innocent pedestrian in Sunset Dunes?

This project is being touted as politically correct. But PC can also stand for Pretty Corrupt and Pretty Crummy.

  2. Oh why stop there? Let’s turn the Goldman tennis courts into an arts filled “park” with hammocks. Let’s put telephones to nowhere on Harding Golf Course. Let’s let bicyclists run down pedestrians INSIDE the Ferry building instead of food stalls. Let’s turn shopping center atria into bowling alleys and let shoppers fend for themselves re errant balls and pins. Let’s just take any designated use space and convert it into another use just because someone else thinks it would be a good idea.

    • I would like a soft serve ice cream machine in front of my house. It’s an art project that needs to be cleaned and maintained by parks and rec

  3. And on a more serious note, has anyone investigated where the money for all these “park” “improvements” is coming from given the recent implosion of the SF Parks Alliance which showed gross and probably illegal mismanagement of money. Would they find “pay to play” corruption in the SF Parks and Rec department like in the Department of Public Works that landed Nuru in jail? Where is the money funneled through Friends of Sunset Dunes coming from?
