Everything Nice: Best Bites for Your Buck in the Sunset

The Sunset District is such a special place for me. As I am always running around looking for the best deals in San Francisco, I find myself frequenting these spots which give the best bite for your buck. Continue reading to find a cost-effective way to have a delicious meal and support some of my favorite restaurants!

Bahn Mi Crunch

646 Irving St.

Hours: Wednesday to Monday, 9:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Closed Tuesday.

This hole-in-the-wall on Irving Street serves some of the best bánh mì in the City, packed with lemongrass beef, pickled veggies and fresh jalapeños. It is a great lunch for less than $15 that feels too good to be true.

Kevin & Chris’s Noodle House

1833 Irving St.

Hours: Open every day 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

The pho at this classic Vietnamese noodle spot is rich, comforting and generously portioned. The restaurant is known for its no-frills-vibe and consistent quality that makes every visit feel like a small ritual.

Thai Nghiep Ky Mi Gia

1427 Noriega St.

Hours: Wednesday to Monday 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Closed Tuesday.

Known for its flavorful duck leg egg noodle soup and crisp wontons, this tiny Noriega Street spot is pure comfort on a foggy day. Affordable, fast and always busy, it is a true Sunset standby.

TRY: Braised Duck Wonton Soup

Little Aloha

1115 Taraval St.

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Closed Monday.

Little Aloha brings Hawaiian cuisine to San Francisco, offering classics like shaved ice, loco moco and garlic shrimp, plus pre-packaged Hawaiian delights. I couldn’t agree more with how one reviewer on Yelp put it: “scrumptious food, large portions and fast service.” I also love grabbing food from Little Aloha to enjoy at a beach picnic.

TRY: Furikake Chicken Plate and Spam Musubi

House of Pancakes

927 Taraval St.

Hours: Thursday to Tuesday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Closed Wednesday.

House of Pancakes specializes in hand-pulled noodles and savory pancakes like beef roll pancakes. Everything is less than $13.

Bei Fang Style

2218 Irving St.

Hours: Every day 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

This Northern Chinese dumpling house is a treasure for big portions at low prices. For 24 dumplings, it costs around $12. They arrive piping-hot and perfectly chewy. Bei Fang is a cozy place to share plates with friends and warm up from the ocean breeze.

Devil’s Teeth Baking Company

3876 Noriega St.

Hours: Every day 7 a.m.-4 p.m.

Devil’s Teeth is a well-known neighborhood bakery that draws a morning crowd for its famous breakfast sandwich stacked with egg, bacon, avocado and cheddar cheese. The biscuit is buttery and soft with just the right amount of crunch. Take your breakfast sandwich to go and enjoy it on the sand at nearby Ocean Beach.

Hours: Wednesday to Friday: noon-8 p.m., Saturday: noon-9 p.m., Sunday: noon-8 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Rusty Ladle is a small and inviting soup and sandwich spot tucked away on Lawton Street. The menu changes often, featuring hearty bowls of homemade soup, like tomato basil or chicken noodle. It is a quiet, comforting place that perfectly matches the pace of the Sunset.

TRY: Bodega Bay Clam Chowder

Toyose

3814 Noriega St.

Hours: Sunday to Thursday: 6 p.m.-12 a.m., Friday and Saturday 6 p.m.-2 a.m.

Toyose is a Korean restaurant set inside a converted garage, giving it the kind of charm you only find in this part of the City. The kimchi fried rice, seafood pancakes and spicy rice cakes are all generous and delicious. It is fun, casual and always full of energy late into the night.

Uncle Benny’s Donut & Bagel

2049 Irving St.

Hours: Every day 4 a.m.-5 p.m.

A favorite for bagels, donuts and strong coffee that keeps the neighborhood moving. Everything is fresh from the oven each morning. It is the kind of place where you can sit for a while and watch the Sunset wake up.

TRY: Bacon Bagel
