The fog reaches Taraval Street early and stays late. This far west, where the L-Taraval train slides toward the ocean and the marine layer settles over the Avenues, the Parkside keeps a tempo all its own, a step slower than the rest of the City. Since June, a bright, two-story cafe at 1100 Taraval St. has leaned all the way into that slower pace. Jandii is built around a single idea, that the time between meals matters as much as the meals themselves.
Maggie & Mac’s, the new spot on the Ninth Avenue and Irving Street corridor, feels less like an opening and more like a place that was always supposed to be in the neighborhood. That is by design.
On Taraval Street, near the western edge of the City, the morning arrives slowly. Surfers cross back from Ocean Beach with boards under their arms, dog walkers loop the block on their way home and the L train rolls toward the end of its line, letting the last of its riders out into the salt air.

After their daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease, founders Gianluca Legrottaglie and Viviana Devoto found themselves rethinking everything they knew about food, turning what began as a necessity into something more expansive. Over time, that process of adapting recipes became an opportunity to build something entirely new – a place where gluten-free dining is not treated as a limitation, but as a foundation.
On most evenings, Irving Street settles into a familiar rhythm. Parents stop into the produce markets on their walk home, students cluster outside boba shops and the N-Judah empties another round of riders onto the sidewalk.
For the coffee shop owners, brothers Dennis and Dan Lee, and their family, the Pixlcat is rooted in a much longer relationship with the neighborhood. They have been a presence in the neighborhood since the opening of Namu on Balboa Street in 2006 and earlier years spent in Golden Gate Park experimenting with creative, accessible street food.
Many here in the Richmond District have started to notice the recent uptick in the hustle and bustle of Clement Street – the brand-new shops and dining options that are drawing in San Franciscans from all over the City.
The holiday season can be a wonderful time to give back to the community. As the end of the year rolls around, here are some of my reccomendations for organizations on the west side to volunteer with or donate to.
