Editor:
District 4 (D4) will be at the polls again in June to elect a supervisor after recalling Engardio in September. Already several individuals have thrown their hat in for the job.
Here’s who will win my vote for D4 supervisor: I will vote for the candidate with the best vision for how to continue to develop the Sunset into a family friendly neighborhood with vibrant small businesses and beautiful parks.
I will not vote for a candidate whose platform centers around a single issue: Reopening the Great Highway. Candidates whose motivations to run are primarily fueled by anger around the opening of Sunset Dunes strike me as tunnel-visioned and unable to have a holistic approach to representing D4.
Both my husband and I are native San Franciscans. But we came very close to being priced and pushed out of our home city. After multiple bids and losses, we were able to buy our home off the Noriega corridor in 2014. We wanted the Sunset because homes were still under a million and we loved the open spaces, small businesses, and chill coastal vibe. Our 1200 sq. ft. Sunset home is our family’s forever home.
The Sunset continues to be a desirable neighborhood for many younger families. I strongly believe the Sunset’s small businesses and schools would greatly benefit from an influx of new families. But our district needs to remain open and welcoming to them.
New housing construction like the Francis Scott Key development at Judah and 43rd seem extremely reasonable and attractive for our district. It brings in families, feeds our westside schools, provides patrons for our small businesses and families will help preserve our chill coastal vibe.
Likewise, our district has launched many small businesses into thriving ones that are contributing to the economic vibrancy of the]city. Both Devil’s Teeth and Andytown Coffee have opened additional locations throughout the City after their original Outer Sunset brick and mortars skyrocketed with business. Gus’s Market has moved into a larger location (thankfully!) and has added a great fish and meat counter and cheese counter. Blackbird Books has moved to a larger location and added a coffee bar. Restaurants – both legacy and newer ones – such Old Mandarin Islamic, Hong’s Kitchen, Vanida Thai, Celia’s, Underdogs, Papa Maks, Hook Fish, Galinette, Day Moon bakery and Sunset Cantina have made our neighborhood extremely walkable and attractive.
If we elect a single issue candidate motivated by grievances, we will short change our district from electing a supervisor who sees our district as more than just a highway. D4 is a district of well established and newer families and retirees; a district of very successful small businesses and a diverse, multigenerational, multicultural district with a wide spectrum of needs.
D4 deserves a supervisor who will have a vision for our diverse needs and a broad vision for the future of D4.

Either you inherit or you are a tech plutocrat.
Otherwise, you are not going to be buying property in the Bay Area!
This government is not family friendly. For example, if you are a family of four, unless you have the ability to teleport, you will need a car or your life will be considerably more difficult.
Ms. Sanchez also overlooks the lack of process that closed that road to turn it into an asphalted bike path for well-heeled techies and a reservoir for kitsch.
This was done in a very sneaky fashion, without any community outreach. Food trucks, scooter and skateboard and bike rentals, etc. are far from desirable additions.
But they are part of the reason why the road was closed.
That and elitist attitudes.
