Press Release: 19th Avenue Repaving Project Update and Schedule

From District 4 Supervisor Alan Wong:

Dear Neighbors,

We worked closely with the Mayor’s Office, Caltrans, and our transportation partners to make sure this next phase of the 19th Avenue Rehabilitation Project delivers needed improvements while minimizing disruption for Sunset residents and commuters.

Originally, this second and final phase was expected to take roughly 40 days. Through strong coordination and advocacy, we were able to push for and reorganize the work into three concentrated weekend closures, reducing the timeline to just 10 days of active closures. That means less disruption for families getting to school, workers commuting across the Westside, local businesses, and everyone who depends on 19th Avenue every day.

This repaving is also badly needed. Anyone who drives 19th Avenue regularly knows the corridor has become rough, uneven, and full of potholes in many stretches. Those conditions are not just frustrating—they are also a real safety concern. This work will improve deteriorated pavement, upgrade the traffic detection system, and make travel safer and smoother on one of our busiest corridors.

This phase follows the successful completion of Phase 1 earlier this year and will repave northbound and southbound 19th Avenue between Lincoln Way and Holloway Avenue, along with the Park Presidio Boulevard and California Street intersection.

During each closure, two lanes will be closed, with one lane remaining open for public transit, emergency responders, and local access.

The closure schedule is as follows:

  • Friday, April 24 at 7:00 a.m. through Monday, April 27 at 5:00 a.m. Northbound 19th Avenue from Sloat Boulevard to Lincoln Way
  • Friday, May 8 at 7:00 a.m. through Monday, May 11 at 5:00 a.m. Southbound 19th Avenue from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard
  • Friday, May 22 at 7:00 a.m. through Monday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m.Northbound and southbound 19th Avenue from Sloat Boulevard to Holloway Avenue

We know these closures will still be inconvenient, and we appreciate everyone’s patience. By shortening this project from 40 days to 10, we are making sure critical repairs get done while keeping the impact on our community as limited as possible.
