The future of the Upper Great Highway will be on the ballot this November. It has served as a part-time park with the road closed to traffic on weekends the past few years. Now, voters will determine if the City should plan for the Upper Great Highway to become a permanent oceanside park.

Unlike a typical Sunset home, Dorothy Weintraub’s garage is not just a parking spot for a car or a stash of retired furniture. Light filters in through the window and the wide-open door, but these beams don’t highlight cobwebs and dust. Instead, they set the walls ablaze with a glow reflected from more than 120 paintings.
Starting Monday, June 17, San Francisco Public Works will begin the annual sand maintenance activities at Ocean Beach. City crews will redistribute approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sand over the next two weeks. The aim is to reduce the likelihood of sand buildup on the adjacent Great Highway during windy weather.
The City’s plan is moving forward to replace the Great Highway south of Sloat Boulevard with a walking path and seawall to deal with erosion threatening a wastewater treatment plant and sewage pipeline at Ocean Beach.

The most disruptive work is nearly complete. Work to replace sewer, water, rail lines, streetbase and repaving the entire corridor has been completed. Construction continues with installing boarding islands with accessible curb ramps, handrails and pavers and landscaping. Curve track replacement work at 46th Avenue is expected to be completed June 7, 2024. Remaining work includes testing trains along the new trackway, and installing boarding islands, landscaping, trees and artwork.
Construction began on the L-Taraval streetcar line in 2019, a collaboration with the SFMTA, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and Department of Public Works. The construction plan consists of replacing rail tracks, overhead power lines, water and sewer lines, repaving streets, updating landscaping and making the neighborhood safer for pedestrians.
