ETHICS AND CORRECTIONS POLICY
Last updated: Aug. 20, 2026
The Richmond Review and Sunset Beacon newspapers are free, community publications serving the nearly 150,000 residents who live in the west side of San Francisco. The goal of our work is always to inform, educate, inspire and civically engage our readers. Since our inception in 1988, we have done this work with the intent of strengthening our communities.
We are members of the San Francisco Independent Media Coalition and the San Francisco Neighborhood Newspaper Association. Our publications follow the Associated Press Stylebook and the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics: seek truth and report it, minimize harm, act independently and be accountable and transparent.
Corrections Policy
Our team of reporters and editors put care into ensuring that we report the facts. Any time there is a factual claim made in an article, op-ed or social media post affiliated with the Richmond Review or Sunset Beacon, you can be confident that it has been verified by our team to the best of our ability.
Being that our work is entirely produced by humans (see more on our artificial intelligence policy later in this post), as much as we strive for accuracy, sometimes there will be errors. When we recognize an error, as soon as we can, we update the post with an “Editor’s Note” stating what was incorrect and what has been changed.
Our most up-to-date corrections are reflected on our website. Any necessary print corrections will be made in the following month’s edition of the paper.
If a social media post or newsletter has an error, we will correct it on that platform as well. Once posted, we will not remove a correction note.
Requesting a Correction
If you believe we have published something incorrectly, please let us know by emailing Editor@RichmondSunsetNews.com. Our fact-checking team will review the request and make any necessary corrections.
Anonymity Policy
We aim to always name sources. Readers deserve to know who is being given a voice in our reporting. On rare occasions, if a source is left anonymous, it is because they have extremely pertinent information to the article, and naming them would put their safety and livelihood greatly at risk. If remaining anonymous, our editorial team has fully verified the individual’s identity and this risk. When sources are left anonymous, you will see an explanation as to why printed in the article.
Sponsored Content
When an advertiser has purchased either print or digital sponsored content, it will be clearly labeled as such. Our team has fact-checked the content to the extent possible.
Photos
We follow the National Press Photographers Association’s Code of Ethics with our photographs. News photographs are neither staged nor manipulated. Individuals clearly pictured in photographs are named, and images are published with their consent.
Artificial Intellegence
We are a publication for humans, created by humans. We do not share A.I.-generated content in our papers, online or in our social media posts. Our newsroom strictly prohibits the use of generative A.I. Reporters may utilize non-generative A.I. for certain features, like audio transcription, but this use is always approved editorially, coupled with in-depth fact-checking and human-review.
Minors
If a minor is interviewed or photographed in our publication, we have obtained written permission from their parent or guardian.
Commentaries, Letters and Neutrality
All commentaries we publish are the opinions of the writers and should not be considered our editorial stances on viewpoints. We strive to remain neutral and offer a balance of viewpoints. We invite readers who wish to express their opinions to send a letter to the editor for consideration to Editor@RichmondSunsetNews.com. Word limit for the newspaper is 350, for the website is 500. Unless there is an extraordinary circumstance, all writers will be named. The content will only be published after our fact-checking team ensures the authenticity of any claims made.
Comment Guidelines
We monitor every comment in accordance with the following guidelines. (Nextdoor uploads our stories automatically – we do not monitor that site.)
In order to show respect for our reporters and fellow community members, we do not allow comments that are:
- Nasty or disparaging.
- Repetitive from the same individual.
- Lengthy.
- Off topic.
- Name calling.
- Obscene.
- Self-promotional.
- Appearing to have been created by artificial intelligence.
We are committed to promoting open dialogue and sharing a variety of ideas and opinions. We encourage stating facts and showing respect for each other.
Independence, Ownership and Funding
