NEIGHBORHOOD INFORMATION
The Richmond District is located in the northwest corner of San Francisco, nestled in between Presidio National Park and the city’s Golden Gate Park. The neighborhood, which includes Sea Cliff and Laurel and Presidio Heights, is home to about 80,000 people. About half of Richmond residents are of Asian ancestry, primarily of Chinese and Korean descent. There is also a large Irish population and many recently arrived Russian immigrants.
Several vibrant commercial areas, including California Street, Clement Street and Geary Boulevard, serve the neighborhood. The 1,400 merchants and small offices in the Richmond District offer a wide range of goods and services.
Local landmarks include the Cliff House and the Beach Chalet at Ocean Beach, the V.A. Hospital at Fort Miley, University of San Francisco and numerous holy houses, including Temple Emanuel, St. John’s Orthodox Church and St. John’s Presbyterian Church. There are numerous attractions in Golden Gate Park, including an American Bison pen, M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, California Academy of Sciences, Strybing Arboretum, the oldest children’s playground west of the Mississippi River and a 9-hole golf course.

I examined the single-family home markets in the Richmond and Sunset districts because these two markets generally track very closely together and compared them against the data in San Francisco as a whole.
Lopez, a professor in the cinema department at City College of San Francisco, spoke about this dark chapter of city history at a recent meeting of the San Francisco History Association, after a screening of her documentary on the subject – “A Second Final Resting Place: the History of San Francisco’s Lost Cemeteries.”

In June, we officially launched the One Richmond initiative with a community kickoff party at Argonne Elementary School. The launch was a huge success and an amazing showcase of the four components of One Richmond: we’re inclusive; we take care of each other; we take care of the Richmond; and, we shop and eat locally.
Almost every Californian, drivers and non-drivers alike, has to interact with our Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). And we all have heard or experienced horror stories about long waits at the DMV office.
At a community meeting held in June at the San Francisco County Fair Building, representatives from the San Francisco Department of Public Works (DPW) presented two concepts for revamping the intersection, along with plans to add a block of Ninth Avenue, between Lincoln Way and Irving Street, into the project.
