Sadly, New Year’s Eve was closing day for two high-quality, beloved local Richmond District businesses: Apple Land Market and Cumaica Coffee.
Both closings are the result of significant rent increases.
Cumaica, in particular, has been a force for innovation and collaboration in the neighborhood.
I spoke with Supervisor Connie Chan’s office about this difficult news. There was the usual rhetoric about working with the Small Business Office and protecting legacy businesses (defined by 30 years in operation!) and acknowledgement that the outcome will likely not be positive.
This is all too common in the Richmond District and many other San Francisco neighborhoods. We need to do better as a city. It’s time for more action and less rhetoric.

The responsibility for these businesses closing rests solely at the doorstep of avaricious greedy landlords. Whose sole goal is profiteering. Connie Chan has nothing whatsoever to do with the Darwinian way of life which Capitalism relies on. The rich get richer. The average citizen pays the price or gets evicted because there’s no commercial rent control. The business lobby made sure of that.
