Letter to the Editor: Problems With the Westerly – Why Build Another High-Rise?

Editor:

Regarding the proposed once 50-story but now 22-story high-rise at 2700 Sloat Blvd. that is strongly objected to by residents in District 4 for being out of character for the neighborhood, among other things, one wonders why a developer would build it right next to The Westerly, a structure 25% smaller that has been mostly vacant since it was built.

Existing on the ground level of this property is a whole block’s worth of empty retail/restaurant/business space that has been sitting vacant since 2022. Why build another high rise right next to this one if you can’t even fill/sell/rent the empty units and stores that already exist? It makes absolutely no sense.

Many D4 residents, myself included, have repeatedly contacted both District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio and State Sen. Scott Wiener highlighting The Westerly’s deficiencies and asking for their assistance in doing something about it that might jumpstart filling this property. There has been no response. Ignoring the needs of their constituents is the way they govern.

PROBLEMS WITH THIS PROPERTY:
1. Unsecured outside natural gas lines.
2. Outside electrical lines dangling from telephone pole that are supposed to be connected to the complex.
3. Bare exposed wood that has water leaks.
4. Excessive rust on exposed utilities on property.
5. Human feces in multiple doorways.
6. Improperly placed siding with incorrect foam adhesive/filler.
7. Water leaks on ground level and in garage area.
8. Outside lighting has been vandalized and not repaired.
9. Graffiti has now started on outside of building.
10. Improper storage of excessive paint and building chemicals on ground floor.

These are just some of the problems that Joel Engardio has chosen to ignore, just like ignoring D4 residents.

Reasons for our supervisor’s recall are not limited to “just one issue” as Joel and his supporters – most of whom do not live in D4 – keep saying as he tries to explain away major multiple problems in our district.

Ignoring the needs of constituents is such a basic trust issue that he should never hold any public office again.

Recall!

Scott Patterson, D4 resident. Born and raised in the Sunset since 1968.

  1. I really don’t understand this letter. If there’s an actual safety hazard with the natural gas or electricity, you can call PG&E and they will come out immediately (when I called them about a gas line issue, they arrived within 15 minutes) to either fix it or shut it off until it can be made safe. If there’s graffiti, you can call 311 and they’ll give the building owner a deadline to remove it. Otherwise, I don’t really spend my time going around making laundry lists of vague complaints about other people’s private property. Similarly, just as I don’t want the government getting involved in policing my siding, I don’t expect elected officials to micromanage the “foam adhesive/filler” on someone else’s siding.

  2. I agree completely with Scott. This building is an ugly empty eyesore, and another building next to it makes no sense, just like closing the GH. It is a neglected blight on Sloat. The owners should be getting daily fines for perpetuating this atrocity.

  3. The Westerly highlights the problems with Lurie’s upzoning plan. It’s a 45 minute commute by transit to downtown. The condos are about the same price as houses in the neighborhood. If someone worked on the Peninsula, there are better options in that direction.
