Press Release: 100-Year Anniversary Celebration of the Dahlia

From the Dahlia Society of California:

The Dahlia Society of California (DSC) celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the dahlia as the official flower of San Francisco. The DSC is commemorating this milestone with a series of local events open to the public, including our dahlia tuber sale, tours of the Dahlia Dell in Golden Gate Park, and expert talks on dahlia cultivation in our Bay Area climate.

Each August, during the peak growing season, the DSC hosts a free Dahlia Show, welcoming thousands of visitors to enjoy hundreds of colorful dahlia hybrids.

DSC President Erik Gaensler explains, “Dahlias are a flower that not only thrive in our Bay Area climate, but serve as a wonderful symbol of the diversity, vibrance and joy that makes San Francisco one of the best cities in the world. The DSC takes pride in celebrating our beloved flower and hopes to steward it through the next 100 years and beyond.”

The Society welcomes new members eager to meet a fun and friendly group of dahlia fans with a passion for gardening and supporting San Francisco’s official flower.

About The Dahlia Society of California – San Francisco

Dahlias have been grown in Golden Gate Park since the 1880s. The San Francisco-based Dahlia Society of California was established in 1917. The Board of Supervisors declared the dahlia the official flower of San Francisco in 1926. Golden Gate Park’s Dahlia Dell, to the east of the Conservatory of Flowers, grows hundreds of varieties of the city’s official flower, lovingly maintained by DSC volunteers for all to enjoy.
