‘Then and Now’: Geary Boulevard and 36th Avenue

Above: This view is looking north across Geary Boulevard (once known as Point Lobos Toll Road) up unpaved 36th Avenue in 1910, the future Shoreview Neighborhood. Shoreview was never built due to shifting priorities following the 1906 earthquake. Photo courtesy of a private collector/Western Neighborhoods Project/OpenSFHistory.

Below: The home at 454 36th Ave. is visible in the background on the right for those with sharp eyes. Now fully paved, Geary Boulevard is one of the busiest streets in San Francisco. Photo by Arden Spivack-Teather.

  1. Those brick columns delineate the boundaries of the historic residential park neighborhood of Lincoln Manor (36th to 38th Avenues to the east and west and Geary and Clement to the north and south). Lincoln Manor (like Clay Park, Sea Cliff Terrace, St. Francis Woods, Jordan Park, etc) were developed in the early 1900’s.
